I rarely see Nate certified contractors in the Phoenix area, because it costs money to get your certification. These days everyone is working hard and just trying to get from one week to the next. It’s hard to spend extra money when it is not necessary for your job. I was really surprised when an application came across my desk for an HVAC technician in the Phoenix area. The contractor was a Nate Certified technician and a woman. It’s rare to find both of those in the HVAC field and even more rare to see a woman in phoenix. I contacted the HVAC technician and she came to the office for an interview. The woman was very polite and confident. She was knowledgeable and clearly skilled. She answered every single question with confidence and I had no doubt that she was going to be a great addition to our company. I offered her the base starting rate, but she was not going to take it unless I was going to offer three more dollars an hour. I knew it was worth the extra money to have the certified technician on my staff, but I told the new technician not to discuss her pay rate with anyone else on the crew. Only my senior technicians make that amount of money and I am not prepared to give everyone a raise at this time.
