When I was a kid, my family and I lived just northwest of Chicago in a suburb called Orland park.
My dad worked in Chicago as a banker and my mom worked in Orland Park at the hospital.
My brother’s and I were often home alone in the afternoon time. My mom didn’t get home until 7:00 at night and my dad didn’t get home until 6:00. We were home alone from 3:00 in the afternoon until one of our parents got home from work. My brothers and I started hanging out with some kids that didn’t live in Orland Park and my mom and dad found out. They didn’t care about the friends that we had until everyone got in trouble for stealing an air conditioner from a vacant house. My friends said that we would be able to get $300 for the air conditioner and we could use the money to buy weed and electronics. We got caught stealing the air conditioner from the Orland Park house and my parents had to come and pick up my brothers and I from the police station. After that, my mom switched her schedule so she was home everyday at 3:00. She made my brothers and I sit in the kitchen and do our homework while she made dinner. She was very unhappy that we got into trouble for stealing an air conditioner in Orland Park and she wanted to make sure that we were not going down a road that would lead us to prison. She was like a drill sergeant after we got into trouble.
