My uncle lived in upstate New York for 40 years.
His house is technically located in Buffalo, but it’s right outside of the city in a very rural area. When my uncle passed away, he left the farmhouse to me. I had not been to the house in Buffalo since I was a kid. I didn’t know what to expect. My wife and I went to visit the property last weekend. One of the first things that we noticed was the age of the house. Outside, the building was falling apart. The roof was leaking too. Inside of the house there were a ton of problems as well. The farmhouse needed a brand new HVAC system and brand new ductwork. We got a contractor to go to the house in Buffalo and give us an estimate on all of the work. The most expensive thing is the new HVAC equipment and ductwork. I got some information from the technician about ductless solutions like a mini split system. My wife and I have a little bit of time before we have to make our decisions about the house and the HVAC contractor. Right now the two of us are trying to decide if we are going to keep the house or flip it and sell it to someone else. I’m not sure that I want to live in Buffalo or even have a summer house in that part of the state. There are a lot of decisions we have to consider and review before we start opening the checkbook.
